Roger Caillois once redefined the field of ludology and devised two systems to categorise the types of play and game he saw in the world.


Since that day, a little medium, the videogame, has shown up, and countless ludologists have studied, reviewed, expanded upon and/or critiqued Caillois' original works.


So, today I take a look at what Caillois originally said through the lens of modern games, and explore the more recent takes on his definitions and categories.
